  1. One agency per state registration

Add a tax agency for each state you are registered in. Each has its own liability account, sourcing, shipping taxability and filing frequency.

  2. Rates from the states' own files

SyncBooks loads the Streamlined Sales Tax rate and boundary files that the states publish, and keeps them current every day. You can see when each state was last checked. You can also type a rate by hand, with its source.

  3. Taxability

Give each product a tax category. Keep exemption certificates on customers, with the expiry date and the file.

  4. Tax per line

Tax is worked out from the ship-to address as you type a sale or an estimate, and on request on a quote. A typed tax amount needs a reason. A missing rate shows as unknown, never as zero.

  5. Tax in the books

Invoices and receipts credit each agency's liability account, and credit notes give it back. Tax on store and marketplace orders is assigned to the state the order ships to, or waits with its reason.

Sales tax liability report

For each agency and period: taxable, non-taxable and exempt sales, tax collected and tax owed, reconciled to the liability account. Record payments and adjustments, and mark a period filed to lock it.

SyncBooks prepares the figures. You or your accountant file the return and pay the state.

1099 report

Payments to suppliers flagged for a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC, per year, with card payments left out. Missing tax IDs and W-9s are flagged. Download it as CSV or PDF. SyncBooks does not file 1099s with the IRS.
